So, What's a little Climate Change?

A little change in the daily temperature is not a big deal. You know that. It can easily jump from 30°C in the middle of the day to 0°C that night. However, that is a local weather deal. Not a BIG deal. When the temperature for the WHOLE EARTH begins to change, we have a problem. Picture this:

You are sitting in the bath tub and the water is a little cold. If you add a spoon full of boiling water, its not going to make much of a difference. However, if you put a whole bunch of spoonfuls of boiling water into a big bucket and add that to the tub its going to heat up...A LOT!

In our case, the Earth is our "bath tub". Each of us makes a small addition to the changing climate. We are adding the spoonfuls of hot water. When we all contribute in the same way, we cause Global Climate Change! Collectively, we act as a big bucket of boiling water that heats up the tub!

SO, now you know the basics on Climate Change. You are ready to take the Climate Challenge!

Make the World Work! Learn about Climate Change!

The Climate Challenge

1. Which of the following are greenhouse gases?
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Methane
Water Vapour
All of the above
2. When was the last ice age?
4.5 billion years ago
20,000 years ago
There was an ice age last year
3. What is the difference between "CLIMATE" and WEATHER"?
Climate is a pattern of weather events over a long time
Climate is BIG stuff (hurricanes) and weather is small stuff (rain)
Climate covers a large area and weather covers a small area
Climate and weather are the same thing
4. The Greenhouse Effect:
Is new and is caused by human activity
Is caused by cows
Has always been present but is more powerful now due to human activities
Prevents the suns rays from heating up the earth
5. If there was NO Greenhouse Effect:
We would all be able to breath easier
The Earth would be 33°C colder
The Earth would turn into a fire ball
The Earth would be 33°C warmer
6. The hole in the Ozone Layer:
Is caused mainly by human made gases in the atmosphere
Is growing due to increasing methane emissions
Is directly over the equator
Is due to El Niño
7. Ultraviolet Rays from the sun:
Are VERY dangerous and MUST be TOTALLY blocked from the Earth's surface
Are partially reflected by the ozone layer
Are long wave radiation rays
Must always reach the Earth
8. Which gases are most responsible for the increasing Greenhouse Effect?
Nitrogen and carbon dioxide
Chlorine gas and oxygen
Ozone and methane
Carbon dioxide and methane
9. El Niño is caused by:
The increase in Greenhouse gases
Changes in ocean currents in the South Pacific
Cars
Reversal of Canada's trade West Winds
10. What are CFC's (chlorofluorcarbons)?
Gases that carry heat away from the Earth
Gases released by cattle
Gases released in the burning of fossil fuels
Human-made gases that have caused the break-down of ozone in the ozone layer
11. Where is the Ozone Layer?
In the thermosphere
In the stratosphere
In the oceans
Around the sun
12. By how much has the global average temperature increased over the past 100 years?
5°C
Not at all
30°C
0.5°C
