What is the Kyoto Protocol?

The Kyoto Protocol is a set of PROMISES made at a meeting in Kyoto, Japan in December of 1997. 160 nations from around the world got together to discuss the Climate Change issues.

The Kyoto Protocol states that the committed countries included in the Protocol will "pursue limitation or reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases". This will be done "with a view to reducing their overall emissions of such gases by at least 5% below 1990 levels in the commitment period 2008 to 2012" (Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). Basically, this means that many countries are promising to reduce their emissions of Greenhouse Gases. The question is, "How will the countries do this?" It will be up to every person (that includes you!) in each country to do their part.

What will you do??

The gases that are included in the Kyoto Protocol are:

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Methane(CH4)
Nitrous Oxide (N2
O)
Perfluorocarbons (PFC's)
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFC's)
Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6)

Canada committed to reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions by 6%.
This is above the world average for developed countries of 5.2%.
