The Annual Conservation Video Contest

We need to be singing from the same song sheet.

How do we make sure this happens?

Take the Loony Challenge

The power of purchasing is an approach that we need to think about.
In business up to 70% of the costs associated with environmental problems are in the design. So the problem is there when you buy it. The price paid does not necessarily represent the real cost. Sustainability means considering both financial and environmental cost.

As a consumer you are in the same position potentially. When you buy something, regardless of how old or young you are, you are a customer. You have a right to buy what you want and to ask for the qualities that you want in a product or service. You have a right to ask for green products and services, especially ones which have been designed to reduce their impact on Climate Change. The Loony Challenge is a test of whether or not people are serious about making change - behaviour change, we mean, not coins.

If you are serious, next time you want to exercise your power as a purchaser, take the loony challenge with you. Ask the store manager if the products are "green" or Climate Change 'considerate'.

TWO VERY IMPORTANT POINTS. BE POLITE! BE HELPFUL!

It is very likely that the store manager has not had this request before and may not be able to answer your question right away. The answer will more likely be no.
If you want to make sure that, if not today, your purchases of tomorrow are improved, invite the manager to your school (with your teacher's prior approval) to share in the learning curve on Climate Change. If all your class (school) participates, that means that more people are willing to exercise their purchasing power. This will help the store manger get you what you want. (This could be an invitation to a manufacturer too.)
